Sometimes I happen to tune into Matt Cooper on the way home to work, I usually listen to 2FM but sometimes get bored and see what else is on. Great show today on Today FM with Matt Cooper. He had Sean O\'Sullivan (he off dragons den fame) and another guy on, i\'ll post the name when i find it. They were talking about Ireland and the potential off the country even in these hard times for manufacturing, it etc...I advise anyone who can download the podcast of it when its up...

Ya, the last word is pretty good, always informative chatter coming from it, I missed that interview with your man, Sean O\'Sullivan tho. I remember watching a video on the silicon republic website about this guy, he gave a presentation a few months ago; saying the same kind of thing, triple or quadruple the population of Ireland (the farmers and Chinese\'s will be pissed, o well). Let the non-tech people emigrate (the majority of us, will have to pack our bags sadface =( ) and attract high tech non-national workers from overseas by offering them huge pay packets (tech boom???). As you know, one high tech job can create up to five spin off jobs………….
Therefore, I think that manufacturing you are referring to is high-tech manufacture (guys in white lab coats), nothing to do with product design, as that will be outsourced.

Not sure I agree with you there chap...downloading the podcast at the minute so can listen again properly and will update this post but on the first point about increasing the population, well firstly we re not near as densely populated as other European countries, we never had the history off been for whatever reason, but we are 5th bottom in Europe and the 4 below us are all more northerly than us. Anyway back to my point, if we were to increase the population look at the spin off, firstly food, we would need to produce a lot more food, hence more people employed in farming...this spins off into shops..farm machinery needs to be bought then so more engineering jobs..i know loads off people getting back into agriculture as they see their been a demand for Irish food and that\'s just a worldwide demand, not an internal one. All these extra people will want to solcialise, eat out, go shopping etc...there\'s more jobs created.. secondly there has been a drive on the last few years to get people to train into these tech jobs, so we will have more Irish people able to take up the jobs...but it could also be argued that the training is been provided, its not our fault if people don\'t take up the opportunity...the reality is over the last two decades people didn\'t want to go for a tech/engineering/manufacturing job...the future was seen in business and services but if nobody can make stuff we are f@%$ked... as for product design..that is a tricky one, I might agree with you on that. The problem is as a country e have no history of it, we don\'t do design per say except for crafts...if these american or Chinese companies come in they may want people who can work in this field but its hard to know...i\'ll do another post tomorrow if i can get listen to that podcast again...

I didn’t mean to sound racist there ok, we do need fresh people to come in because; I think we are stuck in our old ways.
Farming isn’t as employment heavy as you think… ya if you have top quality machinery you can get by without hiring low cost farm workers. You will also need scale and acreage, so do those small farmers have a real opportunity? Yes, some Irish engineers are making farm equipment, but not tractors or heavy plant, just trailers, bailers and the like… but can they compete on a world stage? Not without design they cant… Anyways I just think the government are continuing to place all their eggs into one basket once again.

But post up the pod cast link if you can find it.
