We are Heather and Joe, two software and maker geeks from Seattle, WA, USA.

Neither of us has a true industrial design or CAD background, but Heather has utilized a variety of CAD software packages on a hobbyist level, and is designing a couple 5 key HID right now. Both of us have a strong interest in 3d printing - everything from the basic reprap to voxels, and hope to work with related devices for future projects.

Presently, we have an HCI software package that has been in the works for several years, and is about to get demo'ed to investors. We have a few designs that we're mucking up but are hoping to see what the project, which is very physical design open, brings up in the brains of others and maybe even find a partner to create some industrial design packages to go with permutations of the software. We are also hoping to learn more about sourcing for parts for runs of a few thousand at a time, as one avenue we would like to pursue whether or not investor meetings lead to anything, is setting up our own productions of some permutations of the software and devices.

Essentially, this is all very new and exciting stuff at a very new and exciting time! We look forward to seeing what this design community is all about. : - )

    Cheers,
    Heather and Joe

Hi Heather and Joe, welcome to the design forum.

Nice to see software developers/makers on here, and with an interest in design, you seem to know the in's and out’s of 3d printing that’s very cool. Have you guys sold any of your designs on shapeways? You mention HCI software (Human Computer Interaction is that correct) Is the keyboard you are designing? Best of luck with your pitch to your investors, hope you get funding.

    Hi SketchForSketch,

We do have some initial designs in ShapeWays, but they are not for public use at this time. Heather, in particular, would like to work more in the design area, however, and intends to focus more on that when time allows. She has a bioengineering and software background, so is particularly interested in considering options for those arenas, but also likes a lot of the arty options - ShapeWays in particular, has a really cool start up set of options for such, with a pre tested set of parts like gears and software that has shapes you can twist and turn into new designs in your browser that can be really cool. We like the variety of options Ponoko offers, though, and the very responsive customer team at KraftWurx - always on the lookout for new such sites, too. : - )

The HCI portion basically redefines how you control your computer - You will be able to control it completely using a 5 or 10 key HID option - including typing, screen switches, etc. - It is more efficient, repetitive motion injury preventing, and it will open the door to much more customizable key'ing options. We are looking at incorporating support for flicks in the near term and coordinate based movement tracking in the future. (options like LEAP, but also like what Okreylos has been working on - If you have not seen his work and love 3d HID, check out his YouTube channel - It is amazeballs.)

The investor meetings are in pretty good shape and focused mostly on the software side of things - though any HID designs submitted and used would be worked into the presentation to show off features where possible, fully accredited, remain open use for all sides and seen by people at a very well established company that offers a lot of interesting opportunities for many arenas. For the side where we would actually be looking to produce more than 1 or 2 prototypes of a particular device, we'll be doing the crowdfunding thing, setting up a production pipeline of sorts for designers to get their works out there with the HCI in more of a partnership. It feels like we'll be pretty good on funding for that, too. : - )

    - Heather and Joe
